The inevitable confusion that arises while buying Nightforce spotting scopes is to make the selection between the Benchrest (BR) and NXS model. Both the models have superior features but there is a difference in the price and therefore the confusion enhances about making the choice between the two. Let's draw a comparison among the different features of the two models and it will indeed provide you with the guidelines about selecting the perfect set of Nightforce spotting scope.
Zero-Stop: The All-Exclusive NXS Feature
The availability of "zero stop" is another important consideration. It allows the user to set a stop point. Usually it lies at a 100-yard zero. Once, this is achieved then irrespective of the position of the turret in the travel span the zero can be established again just by spinning the turret down till it stops at a pre-set zero. At present the zero stop option is available on the 8-32 NXS models except on 12-42 NXS.
Click Value
The eighth minutes click value is more preferable for long range shooting because it allows the shooters to adjust the Point of impact more precisely in comparison to the quarter -minute clicks. At 1000 yards the 1/8 MOA click moves the POI to only 1.3 while ¼ MOA click moes the POI to 2.6. When you are trying to dial in on the 3-5 inch X-Ring or 10-Ring then the 1/8 MOA click is the preferable option.
Previously, if the preference use to be 1/8 MOA clicks then the Benchrest models from Nightforce used to be the better choice for you but now Nightforce has come up with the 8-32X and 12-42X NXS models where you can easily dial in the ⅛ MOA click. In case, someone is looking for more precise click values and side parallax control then the 1/8 MOA-click NXS lineup is the most appropriate choice. The availability of the milrad clicks is another important preference for the shooters . The scope must have a MLR reticle or mildot , or some other reticle based on a milradian scale in order to have MIL clicks. Only the NXS scope models from Nightforce boast this advantage.
Usefulness of Side-Focus Parallax over Front Adjustable Objective
The choice of side parallax adjust or adjustable objective largely depend on personal preferences. The front-adjusting Benchrest model doesn't need a lens while in the side-focus parallax adjustment NXS model an additional focus lens can be fitted in the scope body. The extra lens in NXS model has the potential to reduce the light transmission by 1.0 to 1.5 percent as specified by Nightforce. Although the resolution appears almost same and not very visible to human vision but still the side-focus NXS models seems to be much more convenient a choice than the Benchrest models from a prone position whereas the BR models are more convenient in fixed distance mode. Therefore, it can be well said that the NXS offers a quicker adjustment as it uses less movement and the BR scopes offer a finer adjustment using more movement.
NXS has the Edge Being Rough and Tough
The robustness of the spotting scope is a great consideration for the shooters. The scopes need to be carried to far-off locations and it is also important that the scope must last long therefore durability is another significant consideration. If the rifle is meant to be used in field or any tactical situation like hunting then also the strength of the scope matters a lot. The NXS models have the edge on the BR models in this respect as although the BR models are sturdy enough but they are not strong enough to take as much abuses as the NXS models can sustain.
